Abstract

This chapter delves into the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) to address the narrative paradox in interactive digital storytelling (IDS), focusing on the development of Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) that adapt to user input while maintaining narrative coherence. The study presents a murder mystery video game, 'Killer on Board,' inspired by Agatha Christie's 'Death on the Nile,' as a case study. The game utilizes the Unity Real-Time Development Platform and the LLMUnity package to integrate LLMs into NPC dialog, enabling emergent narratives and user agency. The research explores the impact of LLM-driven NPCs on the narrative paradox, assessing how effectively an LLM can generate coherent dialog for NPCs while preserving user agency. The findings suggest that while LLMs can aid in the development of emergent narratives, the narrative paradox was not fully addressed due to mediocre results in the summative experiment. The chapter discusses the challenges and considerations of using LLMs for NPC development, including the potential for hallucinations and the importance of selecting an appropriate scale of the LLM to enhance role-playing capabilities. It also reflects on the limitations of the study and suggests future testing protocols to improve the integration of LLMs in IDS. Overall, the chapter provides valuable insights into the intersection of AI and narrative design, offering a unique perspective on the use of LLMs in creating coherent and engaging interactive narratives.
