Abstract

This study explores the challenges Gen Z students face as they transition from the structured, 'kind' information environments of pre-tertiary education to the more complex, 'wicked' information environments of higher education. Through qualitative interviews with 34 incoming first-year students in Singapore, the research identifies three key areas of difficulty: the shift from passive to active information seekers, the move from centralised to decentralised information sources, and the perception of declining information quality without traditional gatekeepers. The study highlights the stress and uncertainty students experience due to the lack of guidance and the need to navigate fragmented and often unreliable information. It argues for improved informational scaffolding, such as integrated platforms, layered content, and early information literacy training, to support smoother transitions. The findings underscore the importance of developing self-directed information-seeking skills for academic and personal success in higher education.
