Abstract

This chapter explores the critical factors influencing driver lane utilization on two-lane roads characterized by horizontal curves and longitudinal slopes. The study underscores the importance of lane discipline in enhancing road safety, particularly in urban and intercity settings. By analyzing the lateral positions of vehicles, the research reveals how drivers adjust their lane usage in response to various road conditions, such as horizontal and vertical curves, traffic density, and road surface deformations. The findings highlight the significant impact of these factors on vehicle speed, comfort, and the likelihood of uncontrolled lane changes, which are crucial for understanding and mitigating accident risks. The chapter also discusses the implications of these findings for traffic modeling, road design, and the development of safer road geometries. Through a detailed examination of a specific road section, the study provides empirical evidence of how drivers navigate complex road conditions, offering valuable insights for improving road safety and infrastructure planning.
