Abstract

This study delves into the preparation of large-area AA6061 alloy sheets using a multi-pass additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) process with AA6061 alloy particles as feedstock. The research introduces jet-cooling-assisted AFSD to control microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties. Key findings include the activation of both continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization, leading to significant grain refinement. The average grain size in AFSD specimens was 7.7 μm, while JAFSD specimens demonstrated superior refinement with an average grain size of 4.4 μm. The study also identified weak shear textures in both AFSD and JAFSD specimens, dominated by specific texture components. Notably, AFSD specimens showed a disparity in tensile strength between central and interfacial zones, with precipitation strengthening and grain refinement strengthening as the primary mechanisms. In contrast, JAFSD specimens achieved uniform tensile properties, with precipitation strengthening being the main factor. The research concludes that the JAFSD technique offers significant advantages in fabricating large-area AA6061 alloy sheets with uniform microstructures and mechanical properties, paving the way for future optimizations in heat treatment to enhance mechanical properties further.
