The future of combustion engines depends primarily on the fuels used to run them. It is already obvious that fossil fuels will not be the solution of choice for individual mobility in the future, regardless of the recurring debate about peak oil and the finite nature of our oil reserves. Before we are faced with shortages of raw materials, it is likely that legislation will have put a stop to the use of fossil fuels. Regenerative fuels - in particular e-fuels produced from hydrogen and CO2 using energy from renewable sources - will certainly at least partially replace fossil fuels. For experts in the field it is a question of "when" rather than "if." This will probably have happened long before everyone is driving electric cars. …
