Abstract

The article delves into the lateral performance of single and grouped hollow bar micropiles (HBMP) in cohesionless soil, categorized under the Federal Highway Administration's classification system. It discusses the construction methods, grouting techniques, and the unique installation process of HBMPs, which involve a one-step drilling and grouting operation. The study presents extensive field test results, including monotonic and cyclic lateral load tests, and compares these with numerical simulations using LPile software. The research highlights the impact of different drill bit-to-hollow bar diameter ratios on the lateral capacity and stiffness of HBMPs, as well as the effect of cyclic loading on their performance. Additionally, it examines the group effect of micropiles and the influence of soil properties on their lateral response. The article concludes with practical recommendations for improving the lateral performance of HBMPs and the potential of using fiber-reinforced grouts to enhance their resistance.
