Abstract

The book moves again from the organisational to the cultural and examines how recruits ‘learn’ to become police officers. Although much literature on learning focuses on formal learning, in the context of policing, it is as important to consider the ‘informal learning’ within the workplace as potentially a key, if not the key, influence on the behaviour and performance of workers. ‘Situated learning’ (or learning ‘on the job’) and the impact of social interaction on learning are the focus of this chapter. An analysis of the ‘communities of practice’ literature seeks to position police learning as a more dynamic style of learning which does not all flow from ‘master’ to ‘student’, but is based on an exchange of information and the social interaction of the actors involved.
