Abstract

The article investigates the potential of ChatGPT to support self-regulated learning (SRL) in online courses, a critical skill for academic success. It highlights the complexities of SRL and the promising opportunities AI technologies offer to enhance students' ability to manage various aspects of the learning process. The publication delves into the rapid adoption and transformative potential of ChatGPT in educational practices, summarizing complex texts, offering personalized learning experiences, and facilitating interactive discussions. The study focuses on four online graduate-level courses in learning design and technology, using a case study approach to explore students' experiences and perceptions of using ChatGPT to support SRL. Thematic analysis of reflection papers reveals that ChatGPT assists learners in setting goals, developing learning plans, and enhancing task strategies, help-seeking, metacognitive learning, time management, and motivation. The article also addresses the challenges and limitations of integrating ChatGPT in educational settings, including issues related to inaccuracy, academic dishonesty, and data privacy. It concludes with implications for educators and instructional designers, emphasizing the need for professional development and strategic planning to effectively leverage ChatGPT for SRL in online learning environments.
