Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted waste management systems worldwide, leading to an unprecedented increase in both municipal and medical waste. This chapter examines the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool to evaluate the environmental impacts of waste management practices during the pandemic. It discusses the challenges posed by the surge in waste, particularly personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical waste, and highlights the need for efficient and sustainable waste management strategies. The chapter also explores the application of LCA in assessing the environmental impacts of different waste disposal methods and provides practical recommendations for improving waste management practices during and after the pandemic. By using LCA, waste management professionals can make informed decisions to minimize the environmental footprint of waste management and promote sustainable practices.
