Abstract

The chapter delves into the life cycle assessment (LCA) of asphalt concrete construction, specifically the environmental impacts of the construction stage and equipment idling. It discusses the methodology used to collect data on fuel consumption and emissions from construction equipment during paving operations. The study compares the environmental impacts of different construction methods and evaluates the potential benefits of minimizing equipment idling. The results show that the transportation stage of the asphalt mixture has a higher impact than the paving equipment operations, except for particulate matter emissions. The analysis also reveals that reducing equipment idling can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. The chapter offers valuable insights for professionals seeking to optimize the environmental performance of asphalt pavement construction.
