Abstract

This chapter delves into the life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of producing modified biochar (MBC) from canola straw for water treatment, comparing conventional and microwave pyrolysis methods. The study evaluates the environmental impacts and economic costs associated with the production process, highlighting the potential for industrial application. Key topics include the preparation of H3PO4-activated and FeCl3-modified biochar, the LCA framework, and the LCCA methodology. The results indicate that microwave pyrolysis is more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than conventional pyrolysis, with significant savings in material and energy costs. The study also explores different scenarios to optimize the production process, providing valuable insights for future research and industrial applications. The findings suggest that MBC produced through microwave pyrolysis is a viable and sustainable option for water treatment, offering both environmental and economic benefits.
