Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the new Multivan. The VW T7 gets a new interior concept, modern assistance systems, a networked infotainment system and, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid drive.

The new VW Multivan is based on the Modular Transverse Toolkit and has grown significantly in length and width. It is now 4973 mm long, 1941 mm wide and up to 1903 mm high. “We have taken a big step forward in developing the unmistakable character of this icon and yet remaining true to the typical Bulli line,” says Albert Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The new Multivan is also being launched as an extended version with a length of 5173 mm.

The wheelbase is 3124 mm. Starting with the “Style” equipment version, the sliding doors open and close electrically as standard. The new Multivan is equipped with the “Digital Cockpit” and the “Ready 2 Discover” infotainment system as standard, and is always online via a SIM card. The new interior concept features only lighter individual seats in the rear. 469 l of luggage fit behind the third row of seats, and 763 l in the long-wheelbase version. The maximum capacity is 3672 and 4005 l respectively.

Multivan T7 also available as eHybrid

The assistance systems include the local warning system Car2X, the “Front Assist” including city emergency braking function, the “Lane Assist” lane departure warning system, an evasion support system with new turn-off assistant, traffic sign recognition and cruise control. The “IQ.Drive Travel Assist” for partially automated driving is also available as an option.

Initially, the T7 will be launched with two turbo gasoline engines which produce 100 kW (136 PS) and 150 kW (204 PS).  A turbodiesel with 110 kW (150 PS) will follow in 2022.  Gear changes are made with the DSG dual-clutch transmission. The eHybrid uses a plug-in hybrid system with a system output of 160 kW (218 PS).  With the 13-kWh lithium-ion battery, a purely electric range of around 50 km is said to be possible.

Three different "Bullis"

With the Multivan T7, VW Commercial Vehicles is reorganizing its portfolio. The T6.1 van will remain in use for commercial applications and as the basis for the California motorhome.  In 2022, the electric ID.Buzz models and the ID.Buzz Cargo van will also be launched.
