Abstract

The chapter delves into the efficiency of lightning protection systems for wind turbine blades, highlighting the lack of unified guidance for selecting and arranging lightning arresters. It introduces a new electrical geometry model to quantitatively characterize the efficiency of these systems and uses numerical calculations and long gap breakdown tests to validate its effectiveness. The model is applied to analyze the factors influencing the protection efficiency of a 1.5 MW wind turbine blade, providing valuable insights into optimizing lightning protection strategies for wind turbines.
