According to Thomas Eutebach, Plant Manager at Constellium Automotive Structures Europe in Gottmadingen (Germany), aluminum is and will remain the material of choice for lightweight automotive components. In an interview with the magazine ATZproduktion, he outlined the potential of the metal in the context of electric vehicles. In answer to the question of which material - steel, carbon or aluminum - represented the future of modern lightweighting, Eutebach said: "It is not possible to generalize. Depending on the application, aluminum can play both a major role and a more minor one in lightweight engineering. It is much lighter than steel and much cheaper than carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic." Particularly with regard to electric vehicles, where both weight and cost are key factors, he believes that aluminum is currently the best choice. There is a wide range of applications where aluminum is the most appropriate material.
