Fraunhofer Opens Project Center for Lightweight Construction
The "Fraunhofer Project Center for Advanced Lightweight Technologies" has been opened at the Opole University of Technology. It is meant to drive the development and production of hybrid lightweight components.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU and the Opole University of Technology in Poland have joined forces to set up the "Fraunhofer Project Center for Advanced Lightweight Technologies (ALighT)". The newly formed research platform aims to liaise between German automotive manufacturers and component suppliers and their subsidiaries and suppliers in Poland. "Interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships are the cornerstones of top-class research today", says Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Alongside the development of production processes, design concepts and pricing strategies for the production of hybrid lightweight components, the Center aims to handle such fields as modelling and simulation of structures and processes, and recycling and remanufacturing. The results of this research are meant to make the production of lightweight components more energy-efficient, cheaper and greener.
