Bainitic Material for Special Lightweight Components

The special steel Bainidur 1300 will enable cost-effective production of lightweight components in future. Not only because no additional quenching and tempering is necessary, but also because there is no risk of warping.

Deutsche Edelstahlwerke has developed a special steel, Bainidur 1300, with which, according to the manufacturer, high-strength and ductile components for lightweight automotive construction can be produced reliably without warping, resulting in little machining allowance. This means the new bainitic material can be an alternative to conventional steel solutions such as those used by forges and system houses.

Firstly, processing bainitic material is comparatively simple and cost-effective. Secondly, special lightweight components can be manufactured. Whereas forged parts made of conventional heat-treated steels warp during forging and have to be reworked at great expense, workpieces made of Bainidur 1300 can be manufactured in consistently high quality without the need for additional quenching and tempering and without the risk of warping. This also applies to components with larger volumes (> 60 mm round) and considerable changes in cross-section.

Average strength at 1,200 MPa

Another special feature of the new material is the large process window with regard to temperature control while forging and cooling. This allows the bainitic microstructure and component properties to be reliably adjusted and also reduces the testing required. According to the data sheet, the average strength of Bainidur 1300 is 1,200 MPa. This can also be increased in line with customer requirements. Additional quenching and tempering after forging is not required. Another advantage of the special steel is its good machinability, nitriding properties and notched impact strength.
