The article presents the development and optimization of the Body-in-White (BIW) for the Mahindra XUV 700 SUV, focusing on achieving high stiffness and crash performance while minimizing overall mass. The optimization process involved the use of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) and ultra-high strength steels (UHSS) to enhance structural integrity and safety. The design also incorporated innovative joining technologies and structural optimizations, such as ring structures and optimized spot welding, to improve torsional and bending stiffness. The resulting BIW achieved a best-in-class torsional stiffness value of 20.1 kNm/° and a bending stiffness of 12.4 kN/mm, significantly outperforming its predecessor and benchmark vehicles. The article highlights the strategic use of materials and design techniques to meet stringent Global NCAP (GNCAP) crash ratings and NVH performance standards, making the XUV 700 a standout in modern SUV design.
