Abstract

This chapter delves into the potential of lignin, the second-most abundant constituent in lignocellulosic biomass, as a sustainable and effective dispersant. It explores the properties of lignin, influenced by its source and extraction method, and its amphipathic nature, which makes it a promising candidate for various industrial applications. The text discusses the mechanisms by which lignin functions as a dispersant, including steric and electrostatic stabilization, and the factors that influence its properties, such as molecular weight, degree of sulfonation, and methylation. The chapter also highlights the applications of lignin-based dispersants in industries like dyes, coal-water slurry, kaolin suspension, and concrete admixtures. It concludes by discussing the challenges and future perspectives of using lignin as a dispersant, emphasizing its potential as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to petroleum-based dispersants.
