Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative potential of lignin in photovoltaic technology, focusing on its role as a sustainable and efficient material for solar energy conversion. It explores the historical development of photovoltaic cells, categorizing them into first-, second-, and third-generation technologies, and provides a comparative analysis of their efficiencies and production methods. The text highlights the unique properties of lignin, such as its abundance, renewability, and active functional groups, which make it an ideal candidate for enhancing the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. It discusses the various applications of lignin in different types of solar cells, including dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and examines the challenges and advancements in optimizing lignin-based materials for these applications. The chapter also explores the use of lignin derivatives as hole transporting materials (HTMs) and cathode interfacial layers (CILs), demonstrating their potential to improve device performance and stability. Additionally, it highlights the role of lignin in developing sustainable and cost-effective electrolytes and light management films for DSSCs. The text concludes by emphasizing the significant strides and challenges associated with OPV cell development and the potential of lignin to revolutionize the solar energy industry. By maximizing the value of lignin biomass, this chapter presents a pathway to sustainable energy production and highlights the transformative potential of lignin in photovoltaic technologies.
