Abstract

Lignin, a primary component of lignocellulosic biomass, is produced annually in vast quantities, yet only a small fraction is utilized for applications beyond being burnt as fuel. This chapter delves into the structural advantages of lignin, its biosynthesis, and the various methods of lignin isolation. The unique molecular structure of lignin, comprising p-hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl units, offers distinct properties that can be harnessed for diverse applications. The text explores the chemical modification of lignin, which enhances its utility in areas such as drug delivery, bioimaging, and sensor development. Additionally, the chapter discusses the role of lignin in plant structural integrity and its potential in electrochemical capacitors and as an adsorbent for removing pollutants. The characterization techniques for lignin, including NMR and SEM, are also covered, providing a comprehensive understanding of its structural and functional properties. The chapter concludes by addressing the challenges and future directions in lignin research, highlighting its potential as a sustainable and versatile raw material for various industries.
