Abstract

The article delves into the potential of lignosulfonate, a biosurfactant derived from sulfite pulping, to enhance the enzymatic conversion of sisal lignocellulosic fibers into fermentable sugars. Traditional methods for processing lignocellulosic materials often involve harsh chemical treatments, leading to increased costs and environmental concerns. The study focuses on the use of sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) to improve the accessibility of cellulases to cellulose in sisal fibers, thereby increasing the yield of fermentable sugars. The research demonstrates that SLS can interact with lignin, creating a hydrated layer that reduces nonproductive binding between cellulases and lignin, thus enhancing the efficiency of the enzymatic hydrolysis process. The study also highlights the structural affinity of SLS with lignin and its potential to decrease surface tension, facilitating the interaction between cellulases and cellulose chains. The findings suggest that SLS can significantly increase sugar production from sisal fibers, making it a promising green strategy for sustainable biomass conversion. However, the study also reveals that the effectiveness of SLS is concentration-dependent, with higher concentrations potentially deactivating cellulases due to competitive interactions. Overall, the research underscores the potential of SLS as a biosurfactant in the biochemical processing of lignocellulosic materials, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods.
