Abstract

This chapter delves into the limitations and reliability of a study examining how fact-checking strategies influence consumer trust and digital behavior. The study, while insightful, faces challenges due to its small and demographically skewed sample size, which may not accurately reflect broader public opinion. The reliance on self-reported survey data introduces biases such as social desirability and overconfidence, highlighting a gap between perceived and actual behavior. Additionally, the study identifies conceptual ambiguity in the term “fact-checking,” with respondents often conflating professional fact-checking with crowd-sourced reviews or anecdotal verification. The absence of input from platform-side architects limits the analysis of in-platform fact-checking systems and their technical constraints. The methodological approach, while rich in descriptive insights, does not support statistical testing of relationships between variables. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for future research to incorporate larger, more representative samples, multi-method approaches, and greater definitional precision as fact-checking continues to evolve.
