Abstract

This chapter delves into the intriguing phenomenon of liquefaction-induced flow failures in gentle slopes, using two case studies from Hokkaido, Japan. It outlines the peculiarities of these cases, including the absence of ground fissures and sand boils, and the significant role of non-plastic fines in the sand's behavior. The chapter combines field observations with undrained triaxial and torsional simple shear tests to investigate the failure mechanism and the impact of fines on soil behavior. It also discusses the flow failure mechanism and the critical stress ratio line, providing a detailed analysis of the conditions leading to these unusual failures. The chapter concludes with a possible scenario for the Hokkaido flow failure cases, highlighting the importance of non-plastic fines and the unique behavior of the liquefied sand in gentle slopes.
