Abstract

The chapter begins by defining LNG and its primary components, focusing on methane and its environmental implications. It discusses the advantages of LNG for long-distance transportation due to its high density, and the challenges posed by boil-off gas (BOG) during transit. The evolution of LNG carrier propulsion systems is explored, highlighting the shift from steam turbines to dual-fuel engines and reliquefaction systems in response to greenhouse gas emission regulations. The chapter also examines the growth of LNG-fueled ships and the development of bunkering infrastructure, including onshore terminals, tank lorries, and bunkering ships. A critical analysis of LNG's environmental friendliness is presented, considering both carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions intensities, and the impact of methane slip. The potential of bio-LNG, produced from biogas, is discussed as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based LNG. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the continued relevance of LNG as a feedstock for alternative fuels and the importance of carbon capture technologies in extending its lifespan as a fuel.
