Abstract

The article investigates the equilibrium shape of liquid drops on polygonal substrates, particularly focusing on hexagonal substrates motivated by the VLS growth of nanowires. The study addresses the singular behavior of capillary surfaces near corners and quantifies the scaling of the dry corner region. It also describes the limiting spherical cap geometry of the drop away from the substrate. The findings have implications for the VLS growth of hexagonal nanowires, suggesting that steady-state growth of such wires is not strictly compatible with equilibrium drop shapes. The article presents detailed numerical results and discusses the implications for nanowire growth mechanisms.
