Abstract

The study investigates how local weather conditions and human disturbances, such as forestry and mining activities, influence the habitat selection of boreal caribou across different regions in Canada. Using GPS telemetry data from 10 populations, the research reveals that caribou adjust their behavior in response to temperature, precipitation, snow depth, and density, as well as the presence of linear features like roads and seismic lines. The findings highlight the importance of preserving mature forest and minimizing human disturbances to support caribou populations in the face of climate change. The article also discusses the implications of these findings for conservation efforts and suggests strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change and habitat loss on caribou populations.
