Abstract

The ubiquity of the Internet has led to develop security measures to protect its services against abusive and malicious attacks. Most of the mercantile websites extensively use CAPTCHAs as a security measure against illegal bot attacks. Their purpose is to distinguish between humans and bot programs in order to defend web services from the bot programs. In this paper, we propose a CAPTCHA scheme that is based on cognitive abilities of human users. We name this scheme as “Match-the-Sound CAPTCHA” or “MS-CAPTCHA”. The users are supposed to choose the best-matched object from the rest of the images in order to prove themselves as humans after listening to the sound. A study of 50 candidates is performed to check the performance of our proposed scheme. We also conduct a feedback survey from the candidates to explore the usability features of the proposed MS-CAPTCHA. Our study shows that the users get annoyed with distorted text, audio, and background clutter, whereas they enjoy more image-based and simple audio-based MS-CAPTCHAs.
