The global production of lithium is limited to only a few countries. In Australia, the largest share of lithium is mined on a global scale.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, six mining operations in Australia, one tailings operation in Brazil, two brine operations each in Argentina and Chile, and three mining and two brine operations in China contributed the most to global lithium production. The volume of lithium mined at Australian mines alone was estimated to be about 61,000 tons in 2022. Australia and Chile together account for nearly 80% of international mine and brine production of lithium. In addition, smaller operations in Brazil, Canada, China, Portugal, the United States and Zimbabwe also contribute to global lithium production, the U.S. agency said. Due to the rapid increase in demand and prices for lithium in 2022, established lithium operations around the world have increased or were increasing their production capacity.
