New Bosch microchips made of silicon carbide offer a range of advantages in terms of switching speed, heat loss and size, making them a potential successor for the silicon chips used to date.

Additional carbon atoms are introduced into the crystalline structure of the silicon used in the SiC semiconductors. The resulting chemical bond improves the semiconductor chips' performance and makes them more efficient. "Silicon carbide semiconductors bring more power to electric motors. For motorists, this means a 6% increase in range", says Harald Kröger, managing director of Bosch.

According to Bosch, by using SiC semiconductors, 50% less energy is lost in the form of heat in power electronics. Since these can also be used at much higher operating temperatures, this also reduces the need for cooling the drive components. "Silicon carbide semiconductors will transform e-mobility", says Kröger. One possible scenario for the future, for example, could be a reduction in the size of the battery while maintaining the range, which would save both space and weight.
