Abstract

The article delves into the complex mechanics of unstable rock masses, particularly those with sandstone and mudstone interbeds as their base. It introduces a physical model that simplifies these formations and analyzes the mechanical processes that lead to their failure. The study highlights the role of weathering and fracturing in the development of rock cavities, which are crucial for the instability and failure of these masses. Additionally, it explores the softening of mudstones due to water infiltration and its impact on the overall stability of the rock formations. The research applies these findings to a specific case study, the Liejiagou unstable rock mass, to predict failure modes and timing, offering valuable insights for professionals in the field.
