Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate relationship between carbonation and freezing–thawing on concrete durability, revealing that carbonation can initially strengthen concrete but ultimately accelerates damage when combined with freezing–thawing cycles. It introduces a unique experimental method that mimics real-world conditions by conducting carbonation before freezing–thawing tests. The study also develops a sophisticated damage mechanics model that accurately predicts concrete deterioration under these combined actions, offering valuable insights for civil engineers and materials scientists.
