Abstract

The chapter delves into the mechanical property characterization of 3D printed parts, highlighting the significant variability influenced by the manufacturing process. It introduces a methodology that integrates statistical process control with stochastic modeling to estimate the variability in mechanical properties. The research focuses on the impact of printing direction and position on Young’s modulus, shear modulus, and mass density, using a Prusa MK3S 3D printer. The study employs advanced statistical regression models and kernel smoothing techniques to simulate and visualize the spatial fields of these mechanical properties. The findings reveal substantial differences in mechanical properties based on printing direction, with parts printed in the z direction showing significantly lower values. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the practical application of these methods in ensuring consistent manufacturing outcomes and their potential in robust optimization for designing complex structures like phononic crystals and metamaterials.
