Abstract

In this work, we investigated the behavior of a bilayer formed by a non-ionic surfactant (Simulsol M45) doped with a 1% by volume Laponite solution. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to characterize the nano system, and the results revealed that the nanoparticles can be inserted into systems that have a lamellar period greater than the particle thickness and that the lamellar phase appears at all surfactant concentrations. Structure factor and electronic density data indicate that the incorporation of Laponite nanoparticles into the lipid bilayer influences the structural properties of the system, changing the thickness of the bilayer and the lamellar period for different surfactant concentrations. Thus, the use of surfactants as a host phase can be interesting because they have several properties and functions, being relevant in drug, food, and cosmetic formulations.
