Abstract

This article examines the complex interplay between meritocracy and inclusion within Chilean school communities in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores how historical neoliberal reforms and recent inclusive policies have shaped the perception of the “good student” and the role of merit in educational achievement. The study delves into the attitudes of parents and teachers across four distinct school communities in Santiago, revealing how merit is perceived and enacted in different socioeconomic contexts. The research highlights the tension between meritocratic ideals and inclusive norms, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, which exacerbated educational inequalities. It also investigates how the shift to online learning and the challenges faced by low-income households have influenced the perception of merit and the role of effort and attitude in academic success. The article provides a nuanced understanding of how meritocratic beliefs are formed and maintained within educational settings, offering valuable insights into the broader debate on equity and access in education.
