Zusammenfassung

In diesem Kapitel werden die Geodynamik und die klimatische Entwicklung im Mesozoikum dargestellt. Der Superkontinent Pangäa zerfällt, der Atlantik entsteht und der Meeresspiegel erreicht in der Oberkreide den höchsten Stand seit mindestens dem Karbon. Weitverbreitet herrschte Treibhausklima. Für den europäischen Raum werden die boreale und die tethyale Faziesentwicklung einander gegenübergestellt. Zwei thematische Exkurse beschäftigen sich mit großen Eruptionsereignissen und deren Auswirkungen auf Umwelt und Biosphäre sowie mit der Problematik von Impakten in der Erdgeschichte.
