Abstract

This chapter presents a detailed methodology for identifying green freight corridors through regional freight demand assessment, using Visakhapatnam Port as a case study. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing emissions in the freight transport sector and highlights the potential of green freight corridors to foster sustainable and efficient freight transit systems. The research employs a four-step freight demand model to analyze freight flows, project electrification needs, and identify critical corridors for electrification. The study also addresses infrastructure requirements for electric vehicle (EV) integration and provides insights into the costs and benefits of electrifying these corridors. The findings reveal four major corridors with significant potential for electrification, contributing to a greener and more sustainable freight transport system. The chapter concludes with recommendations for policymakers and planners, emphasizing the need for ongoing advancements in green technology and infrastructure to fully realize the potential of green freight corridors.
