Abstract

Water is a vital resource under threat from microplastics, tiny plastic particles that permeate aquatic environments. This chapter explores the significance of microplastics, their sources, and their impact on ecosystems and human health. It delves into various sampling and processing methods, including density separation, filtration, and digestion techniques. The chapter also discusses advanced detection methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Additionally, it examines the challenges and future trends in monitoring microplastics in wastewater treatment plants. By emphasizing the importance of accurate detection and characterization, the chapter underscores the need for continued research and sustainable management strategies to protect water resources and ecosystems.
