Abstract

This review delves into the mechanisms of microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP), focusing on the metabolic pathways, crystal characteristics, and environmental factors influencing soil solidification. It explores the application of MICP in various soil types, including sand, silt, clay, loess, and expansive soil, highlighting the improvements in mechanical strength, hydraulic characteristics, and durability. The text also discusses the challenges and limitations of MICP, such as its resistance to acid-rain erosion and the effects of prolonged erosion on soil strength and stiffness. Furthermore, it examines the potential of combining MICP with fibre reinforcement to enhance soil strength and stability, as well as the application of MICP in repairing soil cracks and improving soil durability. The review concludes that MICP is a promising technology for soil stabilisation and improvement, with wide application prospects in soil engineering, but also demonstrates its limitations under specific conditions and areas for further research.
