Abstract

The chapter delves into the multifaceted effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on microfinance interventions, revealing significant impacts on both the financial and non-financial outcomes of microcredit recipients. It systematically reviews studies from various regions, highlighting how the pandemic has led to financial distress, including reduced income, decreased savings, and increased loan defaults among microcredit borrowers. Furthermore, the chapter underscores the non-financial repercussions, such as deteriorating health, disrupted education, and increased food insecurity. Additionally, it examines the operational challenges faced by microfinance institutions, including difficulties in loan recovery, reduced credit disbursement, and disrupted face-to-face counselling. This comprehensive analysis aims to inform policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of the pandemic on microfinance operations and the livelihoods of microcredit borrowers.
