Abstract

This chapter explores the behavior of microplastics (MPs) in turbulent flows, focusing on the influence of particle size and shape on their transport dynamics. Using an open-channel flume and advanced particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), the study maps the trajectories of spherical MPs with diameters of 1 mm and 2 mm. The results reveal distinct velocity profiles for the two sizes, with smaller particles exhibiting greater variability in movement due to increased turbulence entrainment. The research also delves into the kinematics of MP motion, comparing the particles' slip velocities to their terminal velocities in still conditions. The findings underscore the significant impact of turbulence on particle velocity and the passive interaction of smaller MPs with turbulent flow structures. This study provides valuable insights into the environmental fate of microplastics and highlights the need for further research to understand their nuanced responses in aquatic environments.
