Abstract

This chapter explores the innovative use of microwave-assisted pretreatment to improve the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from Vietnamese bastnaesite ore. The study investigates the effects of different alkaline additives, such as NaOH, Na2CO3, and K2CO3, on the decomposition of bastnaesite and subsequent REE leaching efficiency. Key processing variables, including additive-to-bastnaesite ratio, microwave exposure time, HCl concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, and leaching temperature, are optimized to achieve maximum REE recovery. The results demonstrate that microwave treatment significantly enhances leachability, with NaOH proving to be the most effective additive. The optimized process achieves over 98% REE leaching efficiency under specific conditions, highlighting the potential for energy-efficient and cost-effective REE extraction. This research offers valuable insights into the mechanisms behind improved leaching and provides a promising alternative to conventional, energy-intensive methods.
