Abstract

This chapter delves into the challenges of mitigating vibrations in long-span suspension bridges, particularly focusing on vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) and seismic loads. It explores three primary methods for rotational control of main girders: damped outriggers, midspan rotational dampers, and paired vertical dampers. The text highlights the effectiveness of damped outriggers in providing additional rotational damping and suppressing vibrations. Using the Xihoumen Bridge as a case study, the chapter demonstrates how damped outriggers can significantly reduce vibration amplitudes under VIV loads and offers potential for seismic control. The analysis includes dynamic modeling, optimization of damper coefficients, and time-history analysis under various loads. The conclusions underscore the superiority of damped outriggers in controlling VIVs and their potential for simultaneous wind and seismic vibration mitigation with further optimization.
