Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced its collaboration with Next Future Transportation. They are aiming to conduct the first worldwide trials with autonomous pods.

Next Future Transportation’s autonomous vehicles measure 2.87 metres in length, 2.24 metres in width and 2.82 metres in height and are designed for short to medium distances. An NX1 pod can accommodate up to ten passengers (six seated and four standing). The 20 km/h pod’s battery should enable three hours of operation, with a charging time of six hours.

The autonomous pods can be detached and coupled together during trips. Next Future Transportation’s prototypes are produced in Italy and then shipped to Dubai. The pods travel on a virtual, preconfigured and programmed track and are monitored by an operational system. Dubai’s transport strategy envisages a mobility share of 25 percent for autonomous vehicles by 2030.
