Mapping Material from Here to Turn Dubai into Smart City

Patrick Schäfer

Dubai’s transport authority and Here Technologies have entered into a partnership. The city is to be mapped in high resolution to permit the self-driving traffic of the future.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Here Technologies intend to use the high-resolution mapping material to enable driverless city traffic, which is expected to reach around a quarter by 2030. In pilot projects, Here’s HD Live Map is to be deployed in public service vehicles. A first test with self-driving vehicles is to take place during Expo 2020. A spokesperson for RTA declared its goal of “making Dubai the world’s smartest city”.

The Here Open Location Platform (OLP) is to be used for V-2-X communication so that vehicles can network with each other and with road infrastructure such as traffic lights or sensors integrated in roads and pavements. In the event of a change in traffic conditions, anonymised real-time sensor data from the vehicles can be sent back to the vehicles enriched with data from other sources.
