Abstract

The chapter delves into the environmental impacts of manufacturing multi-material lightweight body parts, specifically focusing on the higher energy demands and embodied energy of materials like carbon fiber-reinforced plastics compared to traditional steel. It introduces a novel modeling and simulation approach that integrates bottom-up process models into a process chain model to predict energy demands accurately. The case study at the Open Hybrid LabFactory demonstrates the practical application of this approach, showcasing how it can optimize energy intensity and reduce environmental burdens in automotive manufacturing. The chapter also discusses challenges and future directions for improving the accuracy and scope of these simulations.
