Abstract

The article introduces a dynamic multi-stage model to simulate the spread of misinformation on social media platforms. It identifies key factors influencing the dissemination of fake messages, such as the trustworthiness of sources and the engagement of messages. The model is used to evaluate several interventions, including crowdsourcing veracity information, accuracy nudges, flagging fake messages, and downranking fake content. Simulation results show that when a significant number of senders correctly identify message veracity, the market can self-regulate. If not, augmenting crowdsourcing with other interventions effectively reduces misinformation spread. The paper highlights the importance of aggregating all past ratings and the effectiveness of different strategies in various informational environments.
