Abstract

Airport security screening systems are crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel. However, delays and long queues at security checkpoints can significantly impact passenger experience and operational efficiency. This chapter addresses these challenges by employing simulation modeling techniques to optimize the security screening system at Dublin Airport. Through a detailed analysis of passenger traffic, check-in procedures, and security operations, the chapter identifies key factors contributing to queue formation and delays. It presents a simulation model developed using AnyLogic software, which allows for the testing of various security system alternatives and optimization strategies. The findings highlight the importance of dynamic resource allocation and the implementation of advanced security systems, such as the Rapiscan 620XR, to reduce processing times and improve overall efficiency. Additionally, the chapter assesses the epidemiological safety of the airport, providing valuable insights into the impact of security operations on passenger health. The research offers practical recommendations for airport authorities to enhance queue management, resource utilization, and passenger experience, making it an essential read for those interested in advancing airport security and operational excellence.
