Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of logistics thinking in managing patient flows within emergency departments, emphasizing the importance of efficient resource management and operational resilience. It introduces the concept of the hospital supply chain and highlights the challenges of overcrowding, extended wait times, and elevated readmission rates. The study proposes the use of modelling and simulation techniques, specifically coloured Petri nets, to identify bottlenecks and improve patient flow. The research procedure involves a detailed case study of the University Hospital Center of Sahloul in Tunisia, utilizing data collected through interviews and observations. The simulation results reveal significant variability in the waiting room, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to reduce bottlenecks. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential of Petri nets for modeling complex healthcare dynamics and suggests future research directions, including the integration of active control mechanisms and hybrid modeling approaches.
