Modelling the Performance of a Reinforced Natural Slope in Niscemi (Italy)

Abstract

https://static-content.springer.com/image/chp%3A10.1007%2F978-3-319-53487-9_54/MediaObjects/440489_1_En_54_Figa_HTML.gif In Mediterranean areas the behaviour of slopes depends on seasonal factors such as initial conditions of pore water pressures and time-dependent conductivity of soil. This is the case for natural and engineered slopes. The paper analyses a case study of Southern Italy, where a slope about to an historical centre was improved through the reshaping of ground surface and the introduction of both coarse-grained material and geosynthetics reinforcements. FEM seepage analysis and limit equilibrium slope stability analysis were performed to understand the failure mechanism of the natural slope and performance of the engineered slope. The numerical results highlight the important role of soil unsaturated conditions in both the slope configurations.
