Abstract

This paper proposes an improved Helmholtz coil to transmit energy to the receiver, consisting of three-dimensional orthogonal coils. The magnetic field induced by two coils is not uniform enough in the typical Helmholtz coil design. The existence of lateral misalignment and angular rotation can result in a large decrease in transmission efficiency. Therefore, an optimization framework of the modified Helmholtz coil is developed through comparisons and analyses. The designed WPT system’s insensitivity to the receiver’s misalignment is theoretically analyzed. In addition, the power losses of the whole WPT system have been studied in detail. A prototype of the modified tri-axial square Helmholtz coil is designed, fabricated, and characterized. Experimental results show that the proposed transmitting coil can transmit energy stably when wildly misaligned with the receiver. It provides a significant guideline for numerous applications, such as household devices and the Internet of Things.
